Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is a payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that allows users to transfer funds between bank accounts instantly using a mobile device. Since its launch in 2016, UPI has revolutionized the way payments are made in India, enabling users to send and receive money in a hassle-free manner. One of the key advantages of the UPI system is that it is free for users, which has made it immensely popular. In this article, we will explore the reasons why the UPI system is free and the benefits it offers. Why is the UPI System Free? The UPI system is free for users because the NPCI, which operates the UPI platform, does not charge any transaction fees from customers. This is because the NPCI does not make any money from the UPI transactions directly. Instead, it earns revenue through the settlement fees charged to banks that participate in the UPI system. When a UPI transaction takes place, the money is transferred directly from the sender's bank account to the receiver's bank account through the UPI platform. The NPCI acts as a payment aggregator, routing the transaction to the respective banks. The banks that participate in the UPI system are required to pay a settlement fee to the NPCI for using the UPI platform. This fee is charged based on the volume of transactions that take place on the platform. Therefore, the NPCI earns revenue from the banks, not from the customers. Moreover, the NPCI is a non-profit organization that was set up by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks Association (IBA). The NPCI's main objective is to promote digital payments in India and to make payment systems accessible to everyone, including those who do not have a bank account. Therefore, the NPCI has kept the UPI system free for customers to encourage more people to adopt digital payments and to achieve its goal of financial inclusion.
